I would sometimes show an interest in people, but it was almost never reciprocated. Once in a while, someone would pretend to befriend me. However, because I was so awful at reading nonverbal cues, I could not tell whether they were serious. I recall getting hurt quite a bit.

I have, over the last couple of months, been putting together a personal narrative. In it, I discuss what I refer to as my “neurological diversity.”

First, I drew a nontechnical genogram. I traced back the diagnoses of myself (and my sister) through our family tree. I then discussed Asperger’s syndrome and the various secondary and comorbid conditions to it (OCD, etc.).

As a result of this process, I have been able to construct meaning out of my life, including why I was (mis)diagnosed with schizophrenia at a time when autistic traits in children were not separated from childhood schizophrenia.

I was wondering if anyone else has done something similar and whether it has been useful to you.
