Personally, I would rather be alone than to just be with people for its own sake. Usually, I am alone, whether it is home in my apartment or in my office during my office hours. For the most part, the only time when I am not alone is when, during the academic year, I am teaching my students.

Most people, I have found, have no interest in my preoccupations or special interests, and I have to keep on reminding myself of that fact. However, if I can’t discuss my interests, I see no point in conversation for its own sake.
